A Peek Inside Lékué

During our recent trip to Spain and France, we visited one of our favorite suppliers, Lékué, to see how their products are designed and manufactured in their offices and factory outside of Barcelona. We learned a lot from this visit and want to share with you how Lékué turns Platinum Silicone into the range of products we know and love.

It all starts here - with the raw Silicone formulated to Lékué’s requirements and manufactured in Europe ...
weighing the contents.jpg
First, a piece of silicone gets hand cut and weighed before being inserted into the molding machine.

The machines extrude 1-4 items per cycle (approximately 2 minutes per cycle) … there are precision molds for each of the Lékué products …

Here is the Spill-proof Baking Liner being produced … one at a time …

Ignore the charming hairnet! But you can imagine the negatives associated with any hair getting pressed into the silicone: Roger (left of me) was extremely helpful in explaining each step in the manufacturing process.

Finally, all of the production goes through a multi-hour curing process in a large oven… the products are weighed both before and after this process, and they know the precise weight of the impurities that they want to remove. This assures that all of the impurities have been baked out when the process is completed …. This is how Lékué assures the high quality of their Platinum Silicone products!

The final step is packaging:
The cured products are hand packed into their retail packaging, and then boxed for shipping.

This was a fascinating and informative visit to a very artisanal facility … where each product is made by hand (with the assistance of some very sophisticated machinery!) and packed for shipment to the global market … and ultimately to your kitchen!
