In spring, you can't help but think that cherry season is right around the corner... And it's always olive season. And olives add so much to a savory dish (see our recipe for Kennedy's Favorite Chicken.)
As you all know, I will often chose a Cool Tool over a knife if it does the job as well or only slightly better. If the Cool Tool does the job a lot better, then I’m hooked. That’s the case with pitting olives or cherries. Trying to pit an olive or cherry without a tool designed specifically for the job, is an exercise in futility: it can be dangerous, is often annoying, and certainly takes way longer than any task should.
There are a lot of olive/cherry pitters out there...why, you may ask, does this one qualify to be a Cool Tool?
First, it’s pretty compact, and that answers the “is it worth the space in your kitchen?” query. It locks closed (and stays locked until you intentionally open it) so that the space it inhabits in your drawer is relatively limited and contained.
Second, it has a little silicone cup with fins in which your olive or cherry rests comfortably. This is nice for the olive or cherry, but it’s also nice for you, because it holds it steady while it’s being probed by the pit extractor (there are all sorts of analogies running through my brain, but I’ve resisted them all!). Bottom line: you don’t have to chase olives or cherries halfway across your kitchen.
Next, it has a cute little scoop on the business end, so it actually picks up the olive or cherry out of the bowl, without having to engage your other hand. This one-handed operation leaves your other hand free to hold... a wine glass!?
And then there’s a little mini splash shield around the area where the pit comes out...easy to direct the pit into the waste bowl, and easier to keep your counters from getting olive or cherry over-spray.
