Why It's Cool: One "driver", one set of batteries, limitless spice grinding opportunities with great throughput and design

As you probably know by now, I’m all about making things easy. That’s why I love electric salt and pepper mills. I love the taste of fresh ground salt and pepper and being able to adjust the grind, but I’m way too lazy to use 2 hands to do it. But if you like fresh ground spices, as we do, your counter can start looking like a forest of mills, and the batteries needed to power all of those can make you a “battery depot”. That’s why we were so excited when we first saw the award-winning Finamill system. It’s one “driver” with individual pods for each herb or spice, which are interchangeable with one hand and a slight downward pressure--simple, unique, brilliant! Definitely a Cool Tool!

There are a number of reasons we were attracted to this concept, and when we tested it, we were even more convinced that we had to share this with our customers.

First, the appearance is very sleek. The basic set consists of a “driver” and 2 “pods”; additional pods can be purchased separately. The driver takes only a single set of 3 AA batteries to operate, thereby conserving the number of batteries you need to operate a full array of pods. The driver is a 9⅝”/24.45cm tall tapered structure that stores the batteries in its easy-to-grasp upper portion and holds the pods in its 3¼”/8.25cm diameter base. It’s topped off by a conveniently angled thumb-operated ergonomic button in the sloped top.

Second, the driver is easy to operate with one hand, both for grinding and for changing pods. It’s a simple one-handed operation (as you can see in the video): put the driver and pod on the counter and press down slightly to release the pod; then position the driver over another pod and press down to engage it: that’s how easy it is to change pods!

Third, the pods have an approximate capacity of 1 cup/35.5cl and are easy to fill: they come empty for you to fill with your own spices, and there is a large opening to make filling very easy. We’ve used the regular pods with salt, pepper, garlic salt, cardamom, grains of paradise, and dried rosemary. We used a Pro Pod (which work with oily ingredients like sesame seeds or flax seeds) with the slightly damp French grey sea salt from Brittany, and it works brilliantly.

Fourth, the throughput is amazing. You don’t want to stand there forever, even if you’re only pressing a button, so good throughput is important. The throughput of the Finamill is truly impressive, making it fast and effective to use. And the non-corrosive ceramic grinding mechanism is variably adjustable: from coarse to fine.

Fifth, the fact that the batteries are completely separate from the salt means there is virtually no risk of the batteries being corroded over time.

Sixth, the optional 4” / 10cm x 10.5” / 26.7cm plastic tray, which holds 3 pods, is stackable, so it takes up must less real estate on your counter if you have several spices in rotation.

Seventh, it has a convenient light in the driver, so you can see how much of any spice you are putting into your dish.

Eighth, it’s less expensive to operate, using only 3 AA batteries for all your grinding needs.

Bottomline: this is a terrific, attractive, convenient, easy, effective grinder to use for a variety of spices with just one set of batteries. It’s the very essence of a Cool Tool--and a great gift for your foodie friends this holiday season.
