Why It's Cool: Make your own compound butters at home--wow your friends!

I just made butter! Let me say that again: I JUST MADE BUTTER! OK, I did that once before in my life when I was in first grade, but that was hard, and this is so easy I’ve already done it several times. This is one of the coolest things ever. Why is it so cool? First, you know the quality of your ingredients, and it’s only what you choose to add. Second, you have unlimited possibilities to make thoroughly flavored compound butters to complement any dish without having to mash the flavor ingredient into softened store-bought butter. This handheld mini butter churn makes fresh butter in minutes!

Here’s how simple it is: You measure out 1 cup of heavy cream, put it in the butter maker and wait 6-8 hours (that’s the hard part.) Now, if you want to flavor your butter, just turn your butter maker upside down, unscrew the ramekin base and add your flavor element: honey, or lemon juice and zest, or roasted garlic and parmesan, or chipotle powder, or… the possibilities are endless. Then screw the base back on and shake the butter maker for 3 minutes. (I’ve found that singing “Shake, Shake, Shake, Senora” while shaking the butter maker makes the time go faster.) This is also a great togetherness thing to do with kids, friends or other family--each person can shake for 1 minute in turn, to get to your total of 3 minutes. Then drain, rinse and enjoy (recipes are right on the butter maker.)
