  1. Carré Olive Wood Dip Olive Boat

    Carré Olive Wood Olive Boat

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $40.99

Why It's Cool: Easy to both serve and retrieve olives in a warm, beautiful presentation

The Olive Boat from Carré is an excellent example of the combination of functionality and design: the “beauty” that we look for in a Cool Tool.

This classic design makes serving olives - whether cured or straight out the jar - easy and convenient. Olives line up neatly in the Olive Boat and can be retrieved easily from either end … and refilling even while your guests continue to enjoy them is quite simple. Cleanup is doubly simple: as with any good piece of wood, no soap or water required. Simply wipe away the excess oil, while leaving behind whatever oil is naturally absorbed by the wood, to achieve the double benefits of cleaning and seasoning. You’ll use this frequently in your home, and it makes a great gift!

  2. Chef'n Avoquado (Avocado Tool)

    Chef'n Avoquado (Avocado Tool)

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $9.99

Why It's Cool: Easiest, safest and most effective way to prepare an avocado

Between the myriad health benefits and the wonderful taste and and rich texture, avocados may just about be the perfect fruit. But now there are articles and studies coming out about a syndrome called “avocado hand”: serious stab and slash injuries caused by failed attempts to penetrate the fruit’s hard outer casing with a sharp knife, before encountering a resistant inner stone. Ouch! Most of us have held an avocado in one hand and a sturdy knife in the other, and put hand and limb in jeopardy each time we’ve sought to enjoy a beautiful avocado. What’s an avocado lover to do? Well, the clever folks at Chef’n have created an answer!

The Avoquado from Chef’n may be the best-thought-out avocado tool that we have yet encountered.

  3. Chef’n Bramble Berry Basket

    Chef'n Bramble Berry Basket

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $9.99

Why It's Cool: Traditional design in modern materials that provides great functionality that extends the life of your berries.

It’s going to be berry season soon (it may be already, in some parts of the country!), and whether you grow your own, or buy them from the local farmer’s market or grocery store, you’ll want to be prepared to enjoy those delicious gems for as long as possible.

But the problem always has been that the berries seem to spoil before you get a chance to finish them. (How many times have you reached into the refrigerator, eager to enjoy some sweet luscious berries, when you’re instead met by a molding mess?).

We’ve published a Cool Tip about extending the mold-free life of berries, but we’ve still been in search of other solutions to this seasonal problem: how can you prolong the life of berries in your refrigerator? We’ve found a very useful Cool Tool to address this problem.

  4. Chef'n Corn Stripper

    Chef'n Corn Stripper

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $7.99

Why It's Cool: Makes fast easy work of strippin gthe kernels off a corn cob

Ahhh summer! The time for tomatoes, and berries, and CORN! I love corn (kennedy, not so much, but he’s from the south, what can I say!?) I love it on the cob (and have a great Cool Tip for getting the husk and silk off) and off the cob in dishes like Corn Soup and Shredded Zucchini Sauteed with Corn and Chives. But getting the kernels off the cob can be messy, frustrating, and sometimes even a little dangerous. (The knife down the corn cob always makes me a little nervous, and knives just aren’t curved the way a corn cob is.)

Well, we found a great solution, although I admit, I was skeptical at first…

  5. Chef'n Hullster Tomato Huller

    Chef'n Hullster Tomato Huller (Corer)

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $9.99

Why It's Cool: Cleanly and easily removes the hull (core) from the tomato, so it's ready to use!

It almost tomato season, it’s almost tomato season, it’s almost tomato season!! I keep telling myself that, as I wait for the tomatoes to ripen in our garden. We actually had our first full-sized tomato from our garden (a Cherokee Purple) just last night … finally … and it was worth waiting for.

So once tomato season finally arrives and there are many beautiful tomatoes in your garden, or in the farmers’ markets, what do you do to make them ready to devour? Well, first wash them (yes, I did grow up to be my mother!). Second, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT PUTTING THEM IN THE REFRIGERATOR! And the next, and final preparatory step is to hull the tomato.

Hulling a tomato means to take out the core that formed at the south end of the stem; it’s that tasteless hard cone that’s at the top center of the tomato. So once you’re ready to hull a tomato, what’s the best way to do it? You can take a sharp little paring knife and dig the core out of the tomato. But I’ve never wanted to do a down-facing dog into a tomato with a sharp knife: the possibilities of slipping and doing damage to myself are too great.

This problem cries out for a tool, and what do you want in a tomato huller that would make it a Cool Tool? First it has to be easy, so that even a child could do it well. But it can’t have scary dangerous sharp edges, because you may want to give it to your child, to help and  feel part of the dinner-making process. However, it does need to be able grasp and cut out the hull - the center core - without taking too much of the good part of the tomato, because, after all, tomato season is short! And you want that tool to extract the hull cleanly from the tomato … and do it with style. Oh yes, and you also want it to be dishwasher safe for safe and easy cleanup because, during tomato season, you will be using it every day!

  6. Chef'n Kale, Greens and Herb Stripper

Chef'n Kale, Greens and Herb Stripper

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $7.99

Why It's Cool: Takes the work out of getting rid of the tough stems!

So I think we can all agree that kale is good for us: it’s nutrient-dense, loaded with antioxidants, a great source of vitamins C and K, a cholesterol and cancer fighter, a good source of minerals we often don’t get enough of, high in eye-protecting nutrients, and it may even help with weight loss.

With all of those benefits, it’s no wonder it’s been catching on like wildfire. So we’ve been looking around for potential Cool Tools that make eating all the kale you should much simpler. For us, one of the biggest preparation frustrations with kale is just getting the edible part of the kale leaf off the nearly inedibly tough stems. We’ve tried cutting it off with a scissors, running a knife down both sides of the stem, tearing the leaf off the stem. None of these provided satisfactory results, and all of them took too much time and effort. There had to be a better way…

  7. Chef'n Large Juicester

    Chef'n Large Juicester (Citrus Juicer)

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $14.99

Why It's Cool: Reams citrus to extract maximum juice, measures juice, strains out seeds, non-slip base

There are so many recipes that require just a little citrus to brighten the dish, and many of them require a specific measurement. While we love the Stainless Steel Citrus Juicer, using this to juice into a measuring cup is often too awkward. So we’ve tested a lot of small citrus juicers with measurements and good reamers, and we finally found one that we think is great.

  8. Chef'n StemGem Strawberry Stemmer

    Chef'n StemGem Strawberry Stemmer

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $7.99

Why It's Cool: Grabs and removes strawberry stem and hull easily...fun and safe for kids to use

It's summer... and we're surrounded by wonderful strawberries! And if you have strawberries, and if you’re going to serve them over a dessert like Guilt-Free Panna Cotta or strawberry shortcake, or with champagne (or anything else you can imagine), you will want to hull them (remove the stem and core). You can do this with a knife, if you’re brave and have good knife skills, but you risk both your fingers and a lot of the strawberry...and it’s pretty tedious.  And there are lots of gadgets out there to stem strawberries, but none of them have risen to the level of a Cool Tool...until now...

  9. Chef'n Twist 'n Sprout (Brussels Sprout Tool)

Chef'n Twist 'n Sprout (Brussels Sprout Tool)

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $7.99

Why It's Cool: Makes the hard work of getting rid of the hard core easy!

Brussels sprouts--the new “it” vegetable, that people are using to make everything from little chunks of roasted goodness, to “slaw”-type salads, to hash, to ethereal sauteed leaves. It’s an extremely versatile little cabbage cousin.

But the one semi-downside of brussels sprouts is their sometimes bitter and always hard core: getting rid of that core is no easy feat. We’ve tried paring knives, but the obvious risk to fingers is always present. We tried a melon baller, but that just didn’t dig deeply enough. We even tried a strawberry huller, but that just wasn’t strong enough. So imagine our delight to find not only that Chef’n had tackled this problem, but that their solution works well!

  10. Cuisipro Apple Corer

    Cuisipro Apple Corer

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $9.99

Why It's Cool: Opens to release the core

OK, so what could be so different about an apple corer?  They have a round tube with teeth to cut through the apple, and if you’re pretty accurate, you get rid of the core and most of the seeds.  I’ve used one for years, and never thought much about it... except when I had to stick my finger in between those sharp little teeth to dislodge the last piece of core.  And while I never actually injured myself, I always felt a bit apprehensive.

  11. Cuisipro Olive / Cherry Pitter

    Cuisipro Olive / Cherry Pitter

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $11.99

Why It's Cool: Holds the olive or cherry for an easier operation

In spring, you can't help but think that cherry season is right around the corner... And it's always olive season. And olives add so much to a savory dish (see our recipe for Kennedy's Favorite Chicken.)

As you all know, I will often chose a Cool Tool over a knife if it does the job as well or only slightly better.  If the Cool Tool does the job a lot better, then I’m hooked.  That’s the case with pitting olives or cherries.  Trying to pit an olive or cherry without a tool designed specifically for the job, is an exercise in futility: it can be dangerous, is often annoying, and certainly takes way longer than any task should.

There are a lot of olive/cherry pitters out there...why, you may ask, does this one qualify to be a Cool Tool?

  12. Swivel

    Cuisipro Peelers

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $17.99

Why It's Cool: Ergonomic handle and balanced weight, along with wicked sharp blades make peeling chores easy

Every kitchen needs a peeler … or two. This most basic kitchen tool performs so many functions: from peeling potatoes, carrots or beets, to cleaning knobs or ginger or jerusalem artichokes, to making long slices of zucchini and other squashes for “vegetarian lasagna” … these are essential tools, for every kitchen. And whether you were taught as a youth to use the classic swivel peeler, or learned (later, in my case!) the efficiencies of the “Y” peeler, you know that you need these tools in your kitchen.

But so many of the peelers we’ve used are simply lightweight, pot-metal junk … they quickly get dull and inefficient, and they rust or otherwise deteriorate, but you don’t discard them quickly enough because, after all, they’re just peelers ...right? ...well, WRONG!

  13. Cuisipro V-Graters

    Cuisipro V-Graters

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $27.99

Why It's Cool: Great design, both visually and functionally, to deliver an easy effective grating solution

We’ve discussed the advantages of Cuisipro Graters, and then they went on to expand the line! The utilitarian box grater has its place in the kitchen: grating quantities to be added later. But there are times when you want a specific tool for the grated material … or maybe you want to offer each guest the ability to control the  amount of grated product (I like a lot of cheese on my Caesar Salad, but Piper likes a little less!) … or maybe you will want to add a performing touch of grating at the table, like most waiters in Italian restaurants. Or maybe you just want a grater that is so cool to look at or feels so good to hold or works so well or is so easy to use, that it puts all other graters to shame!

  14. Evo Oil or Vinegar Sprayer

    Evo Oil or Vinegar Sprayer

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $19.99

Why It's Cool: Sprays a fine fan-shaped mist of oil or vinegar without propellants or pumping

How do you get just the right amount of olive oil on...everything? Olive oil is one of those tough things to spray because it can clog ordinary sprayers. And cookware manufacturers warn against using aerosols on cookware because the propellants are flammable and can leave an almost permanent film on the surface (and if does that to cookware, what is it doing to your stomach?)

But the idea of spraying a thin film of oil is very appealing, because it cuts down the amount of fat in your diet while providing great even coverage. So there are two basic types of sprayers, and we like them both. One is the Ad Hoc Tutto, which is a beautiful pump-style sprayer. But sometimes you want more coverage than the pump sprayer will give you without an arm workout. In that case you want the award winning Evo Trigger Sprayer, designed by Michael Graves and winner of the 2014 International Housewares Association Innovation Award.

  15. Fox Run Brands Corn Crib

    Fox Run Brands Corn Crib

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $14.99

Why It's Cool: Screw threads securely grip the corn cob for a better hold; case keeps them all together

Ah summer, and with it the glory of fresh corn! And if you’re eating it on the cob, you want corn holders to protect your fingers!

These essential “handles” have been around forever, and we’ve all had various types in our drawers. The single-prong models gradually evolved to double prongs, but both of those designs had the same issues: they were sharp, they stored loose and therefore unsafely, they didn’t always stay inserted into the ends of the cob, and because of the metal, you couldn't use them in the microwave.

That was the state of the art until recently. Now we’ve found a design that addresses all those issues, and more: a very Cool Tool!

  16. Fox Run French Fry Pan

    Fox Run French Fry Pan

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $11.99

Why It's Cool: Non-stick surface and air holes make this your go to pan for crispy baking

We all love French Fries … even in the bad ole days of “Freedom Fries”, nobody in the world didn’t want some Frites with some meal … right? Fish & Chips, Steak Frites, Friet Speciaal, Moules Frites - does this sound like a World Cup bracket? You bet! Whatever you call them, everybody, everywhere, wants some.

But almost everyone also wants less fat in their fries … McDonald’s and Burger King have been engaged in a “mine are lower fat than yours” war for almost a year and even processed food makers are offering low fat/no-trans-fat “French Fries” for home consumption. The best food is unprocessed food - in our opinion! SO, what to do, when you crave what Potato Business calls that  “restaurant fry experience without the guilt” …? Deep fat fryers at home present the same issues as restaurant fries: they cook evenly all around, but you’re still left with a slightly greasy dish that has too much fat. What to do?

Do Oven Fries! But do them in a new way to do them better...

  17. fusionbrands CitrusZipper

    fusionbrands CitrusZipper

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $5.95

Why It's Cool: Everything you can do with a citrus (except juice it) in one compact Cool Tool!

IOHO (In Our Humble Opinion) nothing brings a dish alive better than a touch of citrus: either from juice, or zest, or, very often both. And almost every cocktail (from a martini, to an old fashioned, to a cosmopolitan) benefits from a little citrus. That’s why we are always on the look-out for great citrus tools that make adding (or accessing--see the part of this tool that helps you peel an orange) fresh citrus that much easier. And we’ve found one that is compact (only a little larger than a stick of gum), effective (we were wowed by how it accomplished each of its tasks), and very reasonably priced!

  18. Gefu "Spirelli" Spiral Slicer

    Gefu "Spirelli" Spiral Slicer

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $19.99

    Why It's Cool:

We really like to julienne vegetables ...either as a primary ingredient in dishes like Zucchetti alla Colbrook, as components in a salad, or simply as garnish, a julienned vegetable adds color and character. We’ve reviewed mandolines, and noted the advisability of Kevlar gloves. And we’re testing some peelers and box graters that perform this function in different ways, and with differing results.

But among all the tools for this purpose, the “Spirelli” from the talented team at GEFU is truly unique: a clever design for both excellent functionality and safety, all in a compact efficient form factor. A very Cool Tool.

Gefu "Tari" Mushroom / Strawberry / Egg, etc. Slicer

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $44.99

Why It's Cool: Offset blades cut more easily to deliver perfect slices

OK, we’ve already established that if I can substitute one squeeze for 10 knife cuts, without sacrificing the quality of the result, I’ll do it in a heartbeat. I’m all about letting tools make it easier. The GEFU "Tari" does just that, for mushrooms, strawberries, eggs, mozzarella, kiwi, and almost anything else semi-soft that you want to slice. It has 10 Japanese serrated stainless steel blades that are slightly offset so that the pressure of the cutter on the ingredient is distributed, which makes cutting easier and the results cleaner and more precise. Besides that, it is incredibly cool-looking and works beautifully...truly a Cool Tool.

  20. Gefu Adjustable Handheld V-Blade Mandoline Slicer

Gefu Adjustable Handheld V-Blade Mandoline Slicer

    Mage_Catalog_Block_Product_List
    $29.99

Why It's Cool: Compact size, wonderful slicing capability

As you may know, one of the key criteria when selecting a Cool Tool is that it is a home cook's substitute for a sous chef (chefs have sous chefs; home cooks have Cool Tools!). In other words, a Cool Tool does some of the prep work that makes cooking easier, more fun, and with better results. One item that fits squarely in that category is a good slicer, whether it's a countertop mandoline or a quick handheld double-edged slicer. But sometimes you need something in between the awesome power of a mandoline and the quick convenience of a single-thickness ceramic slicer. Something that is both adjustable and has that all-too-rare accessory: a hand guard/food pusher that actually works! Our candidate for this category (think mandoline light or starter mandoline) is the Gefu Adjustable Handheld V-Blade Mandoline Slicer.
