Why It's Cool: Single-handed stainless steel serving tools make serving food easy and elegant.

We’ve all become accustomed to using tongs for cooking--they’re like an extension of your fingers (but without the potential to get burned!) They’re a better solution for moving meat around, because they don’t pierce the meat like a fork, causing the juices to run out. But what about using that same idea for serving? Very few of us can master the one-handed fork & spoon grab, but using two pieces together is the most effective way of moving food from a platter to your plate. Enter the serving tongs (some call them salad or pasta tongs, but they really can be used for so much more!) These beauties (we offer two, because we love them both) make serving food a snap ....

The Tempo Salad Tongs from Cuisipro are a single piece of beautiful mirror-finished heavy gauge stainless steel. Both “tongs” are equal in length and in form, tapering straight back to a ergonomically comfortable handle with ‘just the right amount’ of tension to assure a firm grip on your food. The 9½”/24cm overall length, with a 2¼”/6cm jaw opening make them very easy to work with. These tongs are resistant to both high and low temperatures, making them dishwasher safe for easy cleanup. Finally, the design of these Tongs is patented for their uniqueness.

The Pasta & Salad Tongs from Gefu take a slightly different approach. Made of 18/10 brushed stainless steel, these tongs feature slightly offset arms, with one arm featuring five ‘teeth’, with ⅜”/1cm gaps between them, that are especially effective in serving pasta or pasta salads. At 8¼”/21cm overall length, with a 2⅜”/6cm jaw opening, the Gefu Pasta and Salad Tongs are slightly more compact in form, and weigh almost 0.75 ounce less than the Cuisipro Tongs. Their strength is derived from the design of the tongs and the flexibility: not their weight. And like the Cuisipro Tongs, these are all stainless steel, resistant to temperature extremes, and dishwasher safe.

The final distinctions are in design: straight arms vs. offset arms. Cuisipro offers some greater length with straight arms; Gefu features offset arms, with teeth on one side. Cuisipro’s length does the ‘reaching’ into the serving piece, while Gefu’s more compact offset arms do the ‘reaching’ from above the serving piece. Both have a small spoon-like feature that allows you to pickup sauce or dressing as desired.

Both have their places and roles to play, especially if, like ours, your summer table will feature a variety of foods, ranging from green salads to meat, chicken or seafood, and you know that you - or your host - will need more than one serving piece. Both are well designed, highly functional pieces … very Cool Tools.
