Why It's Cool: A sharp zester with the right curve that cleans itself and an inside out juicer that extracts every last drop of juice--Brilliant!

Nothing puts more zip in a dish than a touch of citrus; we love lime in Asian or Mexican dishes, orange in chocolate or with chicken, and lemon in just about anything. Whether it's finely grated zest, or a splash of juice, it just elevates the dish. Our question is always: what's the best (and easiest) way to achieve this. We've searched for good options for years and finally found what we think is a game changer: a pair of products (zester and juicer, which are less expensive together) from an innovative Australian Company called Dreamfarm, who has re-imagined basic kitchen tools to make them smarter, easier and better to use.

Let's start with the zester. A zester is one of those things that you don’t think much about, but it’s a kitchen necessity. You use (we use it everyday) it to add a touch (or more) of citrus peel, ginger, Parmesan (we even keep a log of goat cheese in the freezer to grate a little over everything from salads to pizza). So what distinguishes a great zester (mostly no pun intended), from a mediocre one? We’re so glad you asked, because we are very excited about the new zester (“Ozest” for pop clean speed zester) from Dreamfarm. (Note: We had actually been on a multi-year hunt to replace our beloved Better Zester from KitchenIQ that had been discontinued, and had almost given up hope, when we found the Ozest; OMG; we were blown away!)

First, the Ozest is sharp, so it makes quick work of any zesting job. But there are a lot of zesters that are sharp--that’s just the entry requirement for our consideration; this zester is so much more. Second, the zesting surface is concave; why did no one think of this before? Most things we zest are convex (they curve out), so when they meet a zester that is concave (curved in) it’s a marriage made in contact heaven--in other words, much more zester/zestee contact for a more efficient and productive zesting experience. Third, this zester has a cover so you don’t accidentally nick yourself while reaching for it in the drawer, but out of the drawer the cover doubles as a catch basin and measurement tool on the back of the zester. Finally, (and this is my favorite, and we think the most innovative part) there is a button on the top of the handle that “pops” the Ozest blade to shake the zest off the back of the zester, so you don’t lose any of it.
 
Now for the juicer. We’ve tried a lot of different tools to extract that small amount of citrus juice, and there are several that we think are good enough to qualify as Cool Tools. But the new citrus juicer (“Fluicer” for fold flat easy juicer) from Dreamfarm has some of the most innovative, clever and effective features we’ve seen.

The Fluicer approaches squeezing citrus in a very different way: by squeezing each  half of the citrus from both the outside and inside, the design ensures maximum juice extraction (which, given the price of citrus, is a very good idea!) The Fluicer also better focuses and reduces the amount of force required to maximize the juice output from your citrus. And the design both catches the seeds and keeps the pith with the outer skin, ensuring an unobstructed and clean free flow of juice to your desired location.

When the Fluicer is at rest in the drawer, it folds neatly into a flat compact form, unlike other juicers, taking up much less precious storage space. 

A humble tools? Not really. Cool Tools? For sure! Problems solved? Absolutely!
