OXO Cast Iron Brush
The product subtitle - “Tackles hard-to-clean cookware” - more clearly states the problem for which this tool is intended. We all have confronted difficult cleaning problems, whether with cast iron, enamel, stainless or carbon steel, non-stick coatings, or whatever we use regularly: invariably, something will stick, burn-on, or somehow leave some residual something that seems to defy cleaning. Whatever you try, even after overnight soaking - scrubbing pads (whether soap-impregnated steel wool or synthetic), various grades of those colored scrubbers on the back of a sponge, scouring powders, or other abrasives that swear they won’t harm your cookware - just won’t get the job done!
The folks at OXO understand these issues and have developed this new tool!. The so-called ‘Cast Iron Brush’ features a round section of 19 clusters of 7/16”/~1cm bristles, mounted on an angled base, attached to a substantial handle - 4”/10cm diameter - 3¼”/8¼mm long - for good leverage and efficient scrubbing power. The bristle clusters overlap to create an effectively flat scrubbing surface, while the clusters also will reach between those ridges that promote grease runoff and add grill marks to your steaks and chops. The backside of the bristle section includes a broad, not-very-sharp scraper tip for targeted work on specific spots. Overall, the heft of the Brush is substantial, but the round contours of the handle make it comfortable to use, contributing to its overall effectiveness.
We say ‘so-called’ only because the Brush can clean so much more than only cast iron! We've used it, to good efficient effect, on stainless steel, carbon steel, and enamel ware, in addition to cast iron, all without adversely affecting the basic surface. Of course, never soak your cast iron or carbon steel! But the Brush really does the job to clean off those small remaining ‘cooked-on’ spots, with or without soaking, especially for well-seasoned cast iron or carbon steel. No soap required! The Brush is dishwasher safe for thorough cleaning, and its matte black & grey colors will fit well in almost any kitchen design and should not develop any ugly signs of age.
This is definitely a Cool Tool; you need to add it to your cleaning arsenal! It sits near our main sink, ready to resolve those seemingly impossible last cleaning details.
