You know the old saying: “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”? Well, everyone is telling us to eat more fruits and vegetables, and the apple, and its cousin the pear, are loaded with nutritional and disease-fighting benefits at a modest calorie intake. And almost every variety of either  tastes great! Very often, we’ll share a single apple or pear for dessert and feel both virtuous and well-satisfied.

Once you’ve established that there are very good reasons to eat apples and pears (and in this case, studies show that raw is better than cooked); the next question is: how do you do that easily, conveniently and with style? For us, the answer is an apple cutter--one of those round things with blades radiating out from a center hole, so that, when it works properly, it easily cuts out the core and cuts your apple or pear into several even wedges. This is also great for preparing a healthy snack-in-a-ziplock bag for kids.

There are two things we look for in a good apple cutter: durability (it has to be sturdy enough to cut countless apples without breaking apart) and comfort of use (when you’re pushing 6-8 attached blades through an apple, it takes some pressure, and you want a cutter that is designed with your hands in mind.) A major downside of these tools is that they often take up extra room in your drawer. And sometimes you don’t go all the way through the fruit and have to push it through from the blade side (never a good idea!) We believe we’ve found a product that solves all these issues beautifully.
