Why It's Cool: Makes it easy to make great pickles of...almost anything

So many of us love the crunch and tang of pickles--they add so much flavor to many dishes. And they’ve become a frequent garnish on restaurant plates. Now they’re making a more frequent appearance at home, because they are so easy to make. But not only are they “good” and easy, they are also “good for you”!

According to Wikipedia, pickling is the process of preserving or extending the shelf life of food by either anaerobic fermentation in brine or immersion in vinegar. A distinguishing characteristic is a pH of 4.6 or lower, which is sufficient to kill most bacteria. Pickling can preserve perishable foods for months. Antimicrobial herbs and spices, such as mustard seed, garlic, cinnamon or cloves, are often added. Almost any fruit or vegetable can be pickled, and the results are often both delicious and healthy.

Some of the health benefits of pickles cited by WebMD are the following:

  • Helps digestion. Fermented pickles are full of good bacteria called probiotics, which are important for gut health.

  • Fights diseases. Cucumbers, carrots and many other vegetables and herbs are high in an antioxidant called beta-carotene, which your body turns into vitamin A. Carotene is a powerful compound that’s been shown to help lower your chances of dying of heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory diseases, and other conditions.

  • May ease muscle cramps. Some athletes swear by pickle juice after exercise to quickly replace lost electrolytes.

  • Curb sugar spikes. Pickle juice, specifically the vinegar in it, may help keep your blood sugar levels even.

We haven’t tried our hand recently at fermented pickles, but we’ve been having fun making quick pickles: onions for flatbread, pears for duck rillettes...and the list goes on. The only thing you need to make quick pickles (or “quickles”, sorry!) successfully is vinegar, water, salt and spices, and of course your cut-up fruit or vegetables...and a way to keep those fruits and vegetables submerged in your brine. That’s where the Lékué Pickles Kit comes in very handy.

The Kit consists of 2 heavy duty glass containers with 2 valve lids; 2 adjustable pressing discs; 1 tongs; and 1 recipe book. The adjustable pressing disc ensures food is immersed in the brine; the tongs can be used to retrieve both the discs and the pickles; the exclusive safety silicone valve on the lid allows for optimal fermentation; and the stackable design means the containers are easy to store in the refrigerator. The silicone case with a label holder window helps keep track of ingredients and dates.

In short, the Pickles Kit includes all the key items to help you make pickles of anything in no time at all. And think how impressed your friends will be when you show off your new-found skill. This is definitely a Cool Tool for you or as a gift for foodie friends.
