Garlic...is there any other single flavor that adds more to so many dishes? We love garlic, whether it’s crispy bits in a stir fry or paper thin slices that almost disappear into the dish. And we have a few Cool Tools for producing just the form of garlic you want. But before you get into garlic processing, you have to get into garlic access...otherwise known as peeling your garlic.
That papery skin that clings to each garlic clove can be a challenge and a frustration to remove. And worse yet, it can leave you with a lingering smell of garlic on your fingers/under your nails, from the garlic juice that inevitably comes from trying to peel garlic by hand. And even if you love garlic, as we do, fingers are not where you want the smell!
This is where a garlic peeler comes in. What, you may ask, is a garlic peeler? It’s a rubbery tube into which you insert your unpeeled garlic cloves (2-4 at a time, depending upon size), and then you roll around on the counter (the tube, not you personally). If it’s working well, then you’re rewarded with clean, peeled garlic cloves disgorged from the peeler onto your cutting board. However, not all garlic peelers are created equal, and the OXO Garlic Peeler has some differences that make it better than others in its category.
First, the BPA-free Silicone is thin but sturdy, which allows you easily to apply pressure to the garlic as you roll it. Earlier designs were more stiff, making the rolling a more difficult process. BTW, here’s a Cool Tip: don’t keep your fresh garlic in the fridge, or at least take it out of the fridge a few hours before you plan to peel it. The moisture from the fridge makes the garlic peel especially tenacious and difficult to remove.
